External Beauty vs Inner Beauty

“Whoa, check out those sexy legs!”
“Oh my gawd, what an eye candy!”

It seems that the power of attraction lies in the external. Our eyes are easily enticed by the bodily and facial features of the subject. Why is that? Do you think we are innately drawn to people because of the way they look or has the media got a role in this matter? To some extent, the media may have influenced us to revere only those with good looks while casting away the ugly ones. On the other hand, I do believe that we enjoy idolising handsome people rather than those who are disfigured or wrinkly. Ask yourself this question: would you prefer looking at a blooming spring flower or the earthy ground on which it burgeons? Be honest now. Of course, the former, if you ask me.

Here’s my next question: so you think Brad Pitt/Angelina Jolie (don’t ask me why I picked them but they seem to be the hottest couple in town right now) is hot at this point in time but are they gonna be remain just as good-looking in the next decade or so? Obviously not because age catches up with them. And, that applies to the rest of us. Once you’ve established that external beauty fades, like all things do, you’d find that the inner qualities that the person possesses radiate the person’s real beauty. Ideally, we would like to be admired for our personality, and not for our exterior. However, in this judgmental world, people tend to display discrimination because of our upbringing; or culture; or the media; or simply our inherent preference for perfect-looking people. For instance, the protagonist who starred in the Korean movie, “200-Pounds Beauty”, gained fame soon after the release of the movie and had probably been chosen because of her striking appearance. But did you know that she went to extreme lengths and great pains to transform her countenance and body? Yes, major plastic surgery! Should she had taken the risk to show up on the audition day looking the way she did before, I think she would have been the laughing stock of the year. It is really unfortunate that even when applying for jobs, you may have been given a chance on the grounds that you possess a pleasant-looking visage, and not based on your personality or skills. But nevertheless, that is not always the case.

For now, I would like to believe that we are not entirely superficial and even if we are, it is only momentarily because once you know the other person’s true colours, you will then be able to decide, with a rational mind, whether or not, he or she is beautiful.
